"Ideas For A Cooler World" - Covering climate protection and possible solutions
Schmelzende Polkappen, Hurrikane, Überschwemmungen, Dürreperioden und andere Katastrophen, die ganze Regionen in Krisen stürzen: Dies sind die drastischen Bilder, die die Medien üblicherweise zeigen. Worüber wir kaum informiert werden, sind die Anstrengungen, die unternommen werden, um die Erderwärmung aufzuhalten. Dieser Workshop befasst sich mit den Problemen der Medien bei der Berichterstattung über den Umweltschutz.
Wir werfen einen Blick hinter die Kulissen der neuen Klimaserie GLOBAL IDEAS, einer Kooperation von DW-TV mit der International Climate Initiative. Ziel dieses Projekts ist es, mögliche Lösungen aufzuzeigen, anstelle ständig nur Probleme darzustellen. Manuela Kasper-Claridge, Leiterin der Wirtschaftabteilung und verantwortlich für Sondersendungen zum Thema Klimawandel bei DW-TV, erläutert die Schwierigkeiten, die das Multimediaprojekt zu überwinden hat.
Melting ice caps, catastrophic hurricanes, floods and drought plunging entire regions into crisis: the drastic images usually conveyed by the media. What we hardly hear is what is actually being done to halt global warming. In this workshop we will explore the challenge facing the media in covering climate protection.
We will take a look behind the scenes of the new climate series GLOBAL IDEAS, a cooperation of DW-TV and the International Climate Initiative. The aim of this project is to present potential solutions rather than pointing a finger at the problems. Manuela Kasper-Claridge, head of the Business Department and responsible for the special coverage of climate issues at DW-TV, will discuss the challenges facing the multi-media project.
Questions to be discussed:
Why does current media coverage focus merely on the negative impacts of climate change rather than on ways to deal with it?
Is it difficult to report on climate change in a pro-active manner?
What role should the media play in the future?
To which degree can this influence public opinion and motivate people to become involved?
How can a global network be built to promote collaboration on the climate front?
