We will present and invite comments and participation in the project mediaME - media development monitoring and evaluation. mediaME is being launched as a follow up to a two-day conference, "Measuring Change: Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation in Media Development" organised by the German Forum Medien und Entwicklung (Media and Development) at Bad Honnef, Germany, at the end of September 2007.
The aim is to create a web-based resource to:
1. help gather experiences and ideas that can be turned into practical toolkits for monitoring and evaluating journalism training, media performance and environmental conditions;
2. share information on M&E programs and projects to encourage greater cooperation in this field;
3. share experiences in M&E for media initiatives in conflict prevention, for urgent interventions in conflict areas, and in post conflict situations, and;
4. pay particular attention and create knowledge regarding early warning media monitoring systems useful to organisations working in conflict areas.
It is hoped that a WIKI format will evoke participation from a wide range of interested parties.
An array of foundations and NGOs has already expressed interest in mediaME. Initial coordination will be by the hosts of the Bad Honnef conference, the German Catholic Media Council (CAMECO), (responsible: A. Sofie Jannusch) with the help of Albana Shala, Press Now Foundation Amsterdam, Thomas Lansner, Columbia University, and Christoph Spurk, Zurich University of Applied Sciences, and several experts.
We envision this as a strongly participatory process that will not be prescriptive, but could provide consensual frameworks that many organisations can use in media assistance monitoring and evaluation.
