Yaman Akedniz

Director of Cyber-Rights & Cyber-Liberties (UK)

 

 

Dr. Yaman Akdeniz - is the founder and director of Cyber-Rights & Cyber-Liberties (UK) <http://www.cyber-rights.org>), a non-profit civil liberties organisation since 1997. He worked as an associate professor at the CyberLaw Research Unit, School of Law, University of Leeds (UK) between 2001-2009. Akdeniz currently acts as an independent consultant and continues to work in the field of Internet related legal and policy issues. Akdeniz acted as an expert to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) Office in relation to the work of the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Effective Implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action and his report entitled Stocktaking on efforts to combat Racism on the Internet, was published during a High Level Seminar on Racism and the Internet in Geneva in January 2006. Among others, his publications include, Sex on the Net? The Dilemma of Policing Cyberspace (South Street Press, 1999); "Governing Racist Content on the Internet: National and International Responses," (2007) University of New Brunswick Law Journal (Canada), Vol. 56, Spring, 103-161; and Internet Child Pornography and the Law: National and International Responses, (Ashgate, 2008), and Internet: Restricted Access: A Critical Assessment of Internet Content Regulation and Censorship in Turkey (with Altiparmak, K., 2008). Racism on the Internet, will be published during 2009 by the Council of Europe Publishing series on Human Rights and the Internet.
