What is the relation between the media and violent conflict? Do the media have a responsibility to prevent the outbreak of violence? Moreover, can they contribute to peace-building activities? More than 300 top media experts from across Asia and Europe as well as representatives from governments and international organizations have gathered in Bonn to attend the second Asia-Pacific and Europe Media Dialogue. Besides the central topic "Millennium Development Goals and the Media", the participants discussed various issues such as cultural diversity and digital opportunities for radio and television, as well as new challenges the media sector is facing in a globalizing world. Bernd Neumann, Minister of State to the Federal Chancellor and Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media, opened the conference in the World Conference Center, which was organized by Deutsche Welle, Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development and European Broadcasting Union. Eveline Herfkens, Executive Coordinator for the Millennium Development Goals Campaign of the United Nations, and Ong Keng Yong, Secretary-General of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) gave the keynote speech.

Representatives from more than 70 organisations, including NGOs, intergovernmental institutions and donor groups, met with experts in late April. Their goal was to develop ways to better coordinate international media aid in post-conflict countries.
Dr. Jürgen Rüttgers, state president of North Rhine Westphalia, opened the conference and Prof. Johan Galtung, founder and director of the TRANSCEND Network for Peace and Development, gave the keynote speech.
