Assistant Secretary-General Soon-Hong Choi

Mr. Soon-hong Choi is the Assistant Secretary-General and Chief Information Technology Officer of the United Nations Secretariat. In this capacity, he is responsible for the overall direction and performance of ICT activities in the Organization. He acts as the principal representative of the UN Secretary-General on information management and technology issues. Mr. Choi is responsible for all substantive and operational needs on information and communication technologies (ICT) of the UN. This involves developing, implementing effective strategies, policies, and systems to modernize and strengthen the UN.

Mr. Choi has over 30 years of technical and management experience in the public and private sectors. He worked for the International Monetary Fund and rose to its top ICT executive. He has also significant experience in the private sector including working for a Fortune-100 company and a small entrepreneurial firm. Mr. Choi has lectured and researched in the fields of public policy, strategic management, and innovation. He has a PhD from the George Washington University and a MBA from the University of Pennsylvania. He has presented his work in a number of major international conferences. His recent research interests include globalization, technology competition, digital society, knowledge management, and ICT for development.
